On Sept. 21, the Boston Athenaeum hosted the event, Boston: Sink or Swim, featuring a conversation with a panel of MIT faculty on the impacts of climate change – specifically the necessary steps to protect Boston and surrounding areas, as sea levels continue to rise and major storms increase. The panel, which included Department Head Markus Buehler and Chancellor Cynthia Barnhart ‘88 as moderator, emphasized the need for a deeper exploration of infrastructure and environmental concerns, as well as social and economic impacts from climate change. “I greatly enjoyed hearing from the several faculty members from different departments who are working together on the same topic,” said Luke Schiferl, CEE PhD candidate. “It highlights MIT’s ability to work together on common problems.” The Athenaeum, a membership-based, private library located in the heart of Boston, is one of the city’s most historic and renowned intellectual and cultural institutions.
